ABSTRACT

The Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) is one of the largest Southern NGOs. It employs some 4,500 people, has an annual operational budget in the region of US$23 million, and operates a number of large-scale multi-sectoral programmes. This paper identifies the various scaling-up strategies which the organisation has used as it has grown, and shows how these have been combined to achieve diverse objectives. Most of what follows focuses on the core rural development activities, but briefer reference will also be made in the chapter to the nation-wide programmes with which BRAC has been associated. The account begins with an attempt to establish a typology of the scaling-up strategies which have been employed.
