ABSTRACT

This chapter presents two case studies. First, rural case study which deals with Environmental Auditing and Mendip District Council. It underlies philosophy of the Councils approach to environmental issues is that they should be integrated in all the Councils work. This approach influenced how the environmental audit was undertaken from the start it was intended that it should facilitate practical action and not just be an academic exercise. Second, urban case study which focuses on Environmental Auditing London Borough of Sutton. Auditing environmental performance has almost become a tradition in the London Borough of Sutton. The exception was the recent audit on the performance of the Councils policy Environmental Awareness and Building, which in effect looked at one of the Councils service effects. It explores three internal audits: in-house transport, waste management and energy use. The complementary management tools of an environmental information system and environmental budgeting should help to firmly underpin the Councils management approach to environmental issues.
