ABSTRACT

Martin Luther King said that ‘If you want to move people, it has to be towards a vision that’s positive for them, that taps important values, that gets them something they desire — and it has to be presented in a compelling way that they feel inspired to follow.’ The development of a positive vision of a sustainable future is a way of getting people motivated and activated in the pursuit of sustainability. When trying to visualize the future, people tend to think in terms of what life will probably be like, as opposed to what they would prefer it to be like. This is essentially a passive and fatalistic process. It reflects a common view that one is relatively impotent in helping to create a more preferred future.
