ABSTRACT
The US Department of Energy (DOE) is preparing a programmatic environmental impact statement (PEIS) to evaluate strategies for integrating environmental clean-up and waste management activities and to plan for a 30-year clean-up programme that protects health and the environment and considers future uses of land. A draft PEIS (DOE, 1995) was issued for public review in September 1995. The comment period ended in December 1995. Currently the majority of environmental restoration and waste management activities are conducted on a site-by-site basis at about 100 DOE facilities across the US (Figure 5.1).
