ABSTRACT
A whole array of issues must be addressed in considering people and conservation. How were protected areas established and managed and what were their impacts on basic needs of local social groups? Have the conservation measures undertaken enhanced existing livelihood opportunities and alleviated poverty and other aspects of human deprivation? Have they encouraged any self-reliance? Or, have they led to resource alienation, marginalization and increased local resentments?
