ABSTRACT
Despite the financial turmoil in East Asia that began in the last half of 1997, the world economy expanded from $28.0 trillion in 1996 to $29.1 trillion in 1997, a gain of 4.1 percent. 1 (See Figure 1.) This marked the third consecutive year of growth at 4 percent or more.
