ABSTRACT

The preceding chapters have highlighted a range of new directions and opportunities in protected area management and planning. They show a world in which protected areas are becoming more diverse, more flexible and increasingly being recognized as an essential element in the wider landscape or seascape. The most important of these changing attitudes are summarized below. However, although much has changed in the last few years, many challenges remain. This section therefore ends with some unresolved questions which everyone involved in protected areas – from organizations promoting protection to managers on the ground – should be trying to address.
