ABSTRACT
The average temperature of the atmosphere at Earth's surface jumped dramatically to a new high of 14.57 degrees Celsius in 1998, according to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. 1 (See Figure 1.) The increase of 0.17 degrees was unusually large, particularly given the fact that it immediately followed a new record set the previous year. 2
