The global economy continued to grow in 1998, expanding by 2.2 percent despite the economic turmoil in East Asia, Russia, and Brazil. 1 This growth, down by nearly half from the 4.2-percent global expansion in 1997, is the slowest since the 1.8 percent registered in 1991. 2
