ABSTRACT

British Telecommunications (BT) is one of the worlds leading providers of telecommunications services and one of the largest private sector companies in Europe. Its principal activities include local, long-distance and international telecommunications services, mobile communications, Internet services and IT solutions. Information and communications technology (ICT) is the enabler, but flexible working is really about releasing the potential of people, supported by technology, and developing a work style that is most effective and efficient for them. Flexible workers typically divide their days between social days and quiet days the latter working at home away from the interruptions of the office. Social interaction is a critical part of work and travelling to meet people will always be part of most peoples work style. The biggest impact of the flexible working initiative in BT has been changing the ethos within the organisation from supporting buildings to supporting people.
