ABSTRACT

Historically, banks and insurance companies have always complained about having to pay for industry's mistakes. Gradually, these and other stakeholders are beginning to realise that management systems have an important role to play in industry as risk reduction tools. As a member of Chemical Industries Association (CIA) the company was signed up to responsible care, which includes both occupational health and safety and environmental requirements. The task of developing an integrated responsible care management system (RCMS) starting from an EMS is not difficult, but it is time-consuming. Frank Richardson is the Technical and Quality Manager at Thomas Swan. He spends some 80 per cent of his time on research and 20 per cent on quality, and yet with the full support of the managing director and board has led the company through the development, implementation, registration and maintenance of the management system standards.
