ABSTRACT
As indicated in Chapter 1, urban areas are developing rapidly and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The sustainability of urban development is the theme with which this book is concerned – and this includes political, social and economic sustainability as well as environmental sustainability A principal premise of the book is that, while socially and environmentally sustainable urban development visions are absolutely necessary, realistic political, economic and institutional mechanisms to achieve these are of equal importance.
