ABSTRACT
In an arid mountainous corner of northern Ethiopia, remote from government services, the formerly pastoral Irob developed a very labour-intensive form of cropping on pockets of harvested soil and water. Two of the many remarkable innovators among these people are presented here: the masters of engineering in stone, Zigta Gebremedhin and Yohannes Tesfaye.
