ABSTRACT

The farmer innovation approach is coordinated in Tunisia by a team from the Institut des Régions Arides, which has mobilized different partners to identify and analyse local innovations, to engage in joint experimentation with farmers, to organize exchange visits and to use mass media to promote the dissemination of farmers’ innovations. When ISWC 2 started in Tunisia in August 1997, it met with some resistance from within the formal research and development agencies because the approach was entirely new to them. After three years, the resistance has disappeared and the perceptions and attitudes of all stakeholders have changed profoundly.
