ABSTRACT

In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of trees growing on farmers’ fields in certain villages in the Yatenga region of Burkina Faso. This is due in part to the systematic protection of natural regeneration by individual farmers and to the use of improved traditional planting pits or zaï’ for growing trees. This chapter describes the achievements of four outstanding farmers in rehabilitating degraded land and increasing the diversity of trees through the use of zaï.
