ABSTRACT

It is generally accepted that agricultural development depends on the interaction between farmers, extension agents and researchers. What is still debated is the nature of these interactions – more specifically, the roles that these different actors should play. The ISWC programme in Tanzania has made scientists and extensionists aware of the achievements of farmer innovators, and has created situations that foster equal partnerships between research, extension and farmers in joint experimentation. This required systematic work both in the government institutions and in the field.
