ABSTRACT
People who work with hand tools (sculptors, carpenters) often remark that the best tools are those they hardly know they are using. This does not imply, however, that they disregard issues in choosing and maintaining their tools: on the contrary, selecting and sharpening tools, acquiring familiarity with the particular purpose of each, becomes an integral part of creative activity.
