ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to discuss the impact of electronic communication and storage technologies on the activities of social scientists. The major impact of these developments so far has been in the area of information retrieval, and most of this chapter is about information retrieval facilities. The new technology also provides facilities for information exchange and discussion among social scientists and for the dissemination of the work of social scientists through electronic publishing. It may be that the stimulus provided by what is usually called computer mediated communication (CMC) will have a greater influence on the work-style of most social scientists than those which are limited to retrieval. The chapter ends therefore with some reference to developments in CMC.
