ABSTRACT

A sentence is parsed by assigning syntax-tags to the words of the sentence and deducing the syntactic structures within the sentence. Most computer-parsing schemes begin by predesignating words of the sentence as “verb” and “noun” etc., but because of the fact that in English almost every inflectable word can operate as at least two of verb, noun and adjective, these particular classes cannot be used as a beginning classification scheme for a computer parser. These tags are frequently taken as a starting point in the higher-level parsing actions such as Categorial Grammar (Morrill et al. 1990) and the various generalizations of phrase-structure grammar (PSG) such as Gazdar et al.’s (1985) GPSG.
