ANN models have enjoyed a resurgence of enthusiasm in the last decade, even for NLP tasks (see Section 4.3.1). It is not parallelism with the human brain, however, that gives ANNs their advantage, but rather their success at learning to solve realistic
and complex problems. It seems that this alternative to traditional AI is proving very promising after a dead-end had been reached with pure symbolic computation (Section 4.2).
