ABSTRACT
The determination of the Massachusetts Bay settlers from the beginning to establish the congregation as the basis of their church polity was evident in the Charlestown-Boston Covenant of 1630. It tied relatives, neighbours and friends together and to God with the bonds of a spiritual contract and committed them to take personal responsibility for the success of their church.
