ABSTRACT

James Mooney (1861-1921) was an ethnologist and folklorist attached to the Bureau of Ethnology between 1885 and 1921. His discussion of the intellectual framework of the Ghost Dance is part of the classic study of the Ghost Dance movement of 1890 first published by Mooney in 1896. It is particularly valuable for its balanced analysis of local variation within a coherent millennial vision which brought different tribes together.
