Identified with no Christian denomination, Abraham Lincoln had a strong religious sensibility. Both in his public proclamation and in private reflection he portrayed himself and other Americans as subject to the authority of a Providence visiting them with punishment for individual and national sins but the outcome of whose power was incalculable.
