ABSTRACT
Continuing to focus on the Presbyterians as a way of considering the relation of organized religion to the Civil War and slavery, this pro-Northern analysis of the denomination's policy identifies Southern clergy, and particularly Thornwell, as successfully shifting the Church's position on slavery Ultimately, however, the part of the church remaining loyal to the Union could proclaim religious justification for emancipation by identifying the will of Providence with the force of Union arms.
