ABSTRACT
The Irish were the first Catholics in America in substantial numbers and had assumed dominance in the higher reaches of the Church by the time the new immigrant Catholics arrived. Thus the argument advanced here is, in effect, for the existing Irish priesthood to guide the faithful through the shoals of a potentially hostile culture rather than entrust them to their own priests, themselves inexperienced in American life. This attitude and practice caused considerable ethnic tension within the American Catholic Church.
