ABSTRACT
An important source of Protestant hostility to Catholic immigrants was fear that they would fragment American nationality. This fear was intensified by the proposal from German Catholic sources that the American Church be organized in ethnic parishes to maintain immigrant loyalty. Anton Walburg, a German immigrant priest in the Middle West, agreed with the proposal but saw it as an expression of 'true Americanism' which would ultimately enrich the content of American nationality.
