In later decades of the twentieth century many of the descendants of the great wave of Jewish migrants became educated and prosperous and progressively assimilated to American ways. These developments significantly affected religious attitudes. The popular novelist, Herman Wouk, gives a rather melancholy assessment of American Judaism in 1960.
