ABSTRACT
Revulsion from some of the business practices of the new industrial order provoked, at its most conservative, an insistence on the morally responsible use of investment capital and accumulated wealth by individuals. It will be noted that the extract below offers no hint of any need for organised action to regulate the economic system, and in the writer's preference for philanthropy operating indirectly, implies a sceptical view of the moral character of the poor.
