ABSTRACT
Though primitive in its methods, this survey of 1899 of the opinions of labour movement spokesmen and working people about the churches is revealing of attitudes which Social Gospel ministers were trying to overcome. The response of the ministerial author is noteworthy for its dismissal of criticisms of the churches as unjustified; he claims the workers themselves are responsible for their sense of alienation. The Social Gospel outlook was adopted by only a minority of ministers.
