ABSTRACT
Having foreshadowed the events of the early 1740s in the revival he preached at Northampton in 1734-35, Jonathan Edwards in general favoured the view of the Awakening here expressed by his Boston colleague, Cooper. Yet he remained wary of excessive zeal and innovation. The main body of Distinguishing Marks is directed to defining the signs which indicated a revival was the work of the Spirit rather than of Satan.
