War

Quakers faced a particular dilemma at the time of the War for Independence. Some of their leaders, recalling the protection the sect had secured from earlier monarchs were in sentiment, though not actively, inclined to Loyalism. Whether or not these feelings were shared by the body of the Friends, their pacifism in wartime subjected them to criticism from Patriots.
