ABSTRACT
It was amongst members of the Society of Friends that some of the earliest public criticisms of slavery occurred in both the American colonies and Britain. The statement of the Yearly Meeting concisely summarises the conventional arguments deployed by the 1830s in Christian bodies as to the sinfulness of slavery and the desirability of its ending.
