The chapters that constitute this volume are based on papers that were presented at the two-day Conference on Japanese Language Teaching: Materials and Course Design, 28 February and 1 March 1991, at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. This conference was planned as a sequel to an earlier Japanese language teaching seminar held in 1987. 1
