ABSTRACT

Until recently, the design of a language course was something that was done primarily by teachers. Although teachers of course designed courses taking into consideration the learners’ needs and readiness, it was the teachers who made the final decision; inevitably, it was not always in concordance with the learners’ wants. As a result, learners were often forced to learn in ways that were inappropriate to their own pace and style of learning, which often resulted in their being discouraged from learning altogether.
