ABSTRACT

Under a recent Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) initiative, a number of academic institutions has started offering Japanese language courses for businesspeople. 4 Although short and/or individualised courses for business purposes have been offered by several language schools and extramural university departments for some time, long intensive courses within tertiary institutions are very much a new challenge for UK universities. This paper presents the task-centred approach adopted for the intensive Business Japanese Course that forms part of the SOAS/DTI Diploma Course, and examines some of the problems faced by this type of course.
