An integrated approach to placement in Japan

Part I (Kaiser) of this paper deals with the concept of placement in the country of the target language as a (compulsory) part of a degree course in a Modern Language in general, and Japanese in particular; a preliminary investigation is made of issues such as the timing and duration of the placement, its optimum design in order to improve overall capability in the target language and ways of achieving maximum integration with the base ⁶ component.
