ABSTRACT
The aim of the excursion was to give the geographical background and attempt to highlight the townscape qualities of a city which medieval writers likened to Jerusalem, which Ruskin termed one of the wonders of the world and which Pevsner, more modestly, called one of the architectural experiences of Europe. The picture was built up from a series of stops or vantage points.
