ABSTRACT

Kalamata is the capital of the Messima prefecture and is located about 280km south of Athens. In 1986 it had a population of 41,911 people, 30% of the population of the prefecture (1981 census). Messinia is an agricultural area with Kalamata City serving an additional role as a manufacturing centre. Only 8.3% of the population is employed in the agricultural sector (Urban Plan of Kalamata, 1986).
