ABSTRACT

Most building simulation programs are not capable of simulating the dynamic interaction between a building and a solar wall without tricking. A module for simulating solar walls has been integrated in the building simulation program, tsbi3. The module is capable of simulating temperatures and air-flows in different types of solar walls (with one or two opaque constructions, with and without openings for air-movements), ranging from simple unventilated mass walls to solar walls used for preheating of ventilation air. The type of solar wall is determined internally in the module by the number of opaque constructions and the number and location of eventual openings for air-movements in the solar wall. The types of solar walls which can be simulated in the module are those considered most attractive from a energy conservation and a passive solar utilization point of view, in cold or moderate climates.
