ABSTRACT

Spatial collectors are glazed habitable spaces from which sun-warmed air can be extracted. While glazed atria, su s 1 or glazed balconies 2 are not as efficient at heating air as are flat-plate collectors, they do offer the benefit of being habitable part of the time. Atria can provide a pleasant access and circulation route and a social gathering place. Similarly, su s are brightly lit spaces extending the living space of a residence for a considerable part of the year. This chapter describes concepts to make active use of the warm air that accumulates at the top of such spaces. The primary use is as a source of fresh air for ventilation. 3
