ABSTRACT

On an island two kilometers off the coast of Tanzania; about 135 miles south of Dar es Salaam. Though the main historical sites are on this island, which is formally called Kilwa Kisiwani (“Kilwa on the Island”), two nearby towns also bear the name: Kilwa Kivinje (“Kilwa of the Casuarina Trees”) located on the adjacent mainland, and Kilwa Masoko (“Kilwa of the Market”) on a peninsula.
