Universal military service was reintroduced in 1935, covering all males from the age of 18 to 45, or up to 60 in the case of officers and NCOs. 1 A year later the strength of the army already stood at 550,000 men, and by August 1939 a total of 2.6 million soldiers came under the Wehrmacht High Command (OKW).
