ABSTRACT

Under a JOULE DG XII project, it has been developed the modelling of a prototype of maximum power point tracking system (MPPT). The aim of this work is to show that when describing a MPPT system or any device that include the capability of finding the maximum power point, it could be necessary to pay attention to the ability of the MPPT for finding the maximum power of the solar array. An example of simulation of this situation is given. This example suggests that a MPPT system must be described for two conceptually different kinds of efficiency. The first efficiency is that commonly considered and related with the self-consumption of the MPPT system (described as the rate of the output power of the MPPT system to the output power of the solar PV array). The second efficiency describes the capability of the MPPT system for finding the maximum power of the array. We call this efficiency the Mpp ability.
