ABSTRACT

Solar photovoltaic driven refrigeration represents an application which warrants a major attention as a market opportunity, especially in northern latitude countries and as a means to achieve CO2 reduction in the transportation area. The objective of this application is the replacement of the diesel generator with a photovoltaic system sized in such away as to provide enough power to allow operation under the same conditions for the two technologies. This paper describes an update of the results of operation of the solar powered, refrigerated delivery trailer (Solar trailer) operated by J Sainsbury plc. A month by month analysis of operation is described detailing the energy requirements of deliveries and the level of operation that is sustainable. The performance of the trailer is shown to achieve its design brief of achieving a daily delivery of chill produce throughout the year.
