ABSTRACT

Solar Home Systems (SHSs) are expected to provide a least-cost option for rural electrification and could supplement grid based electrification policies. Large scale application of SHSs is foreseen in the near future. However, SHSs contain substances that can be harmful to the environment and human health such as lead, mercury and other heavy metals, sulphuric acids and PVC. The issue of pollution caused by the waste of SHSs has not drawn much attention. In this paper, a strategy based on prevention, reduction and recollection and recycling is discussed to address the issue.
