ABSTRACT

DICK ELLINGWORTH had first been posted to Tokyo in 1951. He was appointed First Secretary (Information) in the Embassy in 1963 and was also given the job of ‘Olympic Attache’. This meant he was responsible for helping the British team in the Olympic Games which were held in Tokyo in October 1964. During his time in Belgrade before returning to Tokyo, the European Games had been held there. So he had some knowledge of the implications of such an occasion for the British Embassy, although the games were limited to track and field athletics whereas the Olympic Games in Tokyo included many more events. Ellingworth explained:-
