ABSTRACT
THE BRITISH who came to Japan in the immediate post-war years had few illusions about Japan's militarists. They hoped that Japan's new democracy would succeed, but many were doubtful. They were generally concerned by the poverty and destruction they found and many of them sought to establish friendships with individual Japanese.
