ABSTRACT
MERRICK BAKER-BATES was first a diplomatic service language student in Japan. He later became Commercial Counsellor. He then transferred to commerce for four years before returning to the diplomatic service. His last post was Consul General in Los Angeles. Here he describes his various lives in Japan:
