ABSTRACT

THE WAR gave a major impetus to Japanese language studies and later to studies of Japanese culture in all its manifestations including Japanese society, politics, economics, literature and the arts. The development of Japanese studies in the University of London and elsewhere in Britain was explained by Professor F.J. Daniels of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in his inaugural lecture as Professor of Japanese on 7 November 1963 (Bulletin No 41 of the Japan Society).
