ABSTRACT

El-mice are an inbred mutant strain susceptible to convulsive seizures. We have reported that brain 5-HT is closely related to the susceptibility of El-mice to seizures. In this present paper we observed that emotional stress markedly inhibited El-mouse convulsions. NE and DA levels in El-mouse brain were hardly affected by stress, though a marked decrease in NE and DA levels was observed in the ddY-mouse brain. The 5-HT levels decreased in the El-mouse brain in the same degree as in the ddY-mouse brain. These findings suggest that particularly the 5-HT-ergic system is involved in the inhibition of El-mouse convulsion, through an enhanced 5-HT release in the brain brought on by the emotional stress.
